FAQ

What is the difference between sterling silver and pewter?

You may be wondering what the difference is between the pieces you are seeing in sterling silver and in pewter, when they look nearly identical.

Pewter and sterling silver both have rich histories and have been used in jewelry since ancient days.  Silver is a pure element, and sterling silver is an alloy consisting of 92.5% pure silver, and 7.5 % copper.  It is a bright white metal and is very durable.  While it typically will not react with you skin, it can become discolored due to oxidation.  A simple polish with a polishing cloth will bring your sterling jewelry back to new.  Because it is a rare and noble metal, it is a higher price that other materials.

Pewter has also been used in various ways for a very long time.  It is made of an alloy of metals, mostly tin.  The other elements contained in pewter are copper, bismuth, and antimony, which are all added to create a harder and more durable metal.   All pewter we use is completely lead free.  While pewter is softer than sterling silver, the benefit of this is its amazing ability to capture minute details beautifully.  Pewter can scratch, but will not tarnish or rust.  It can develop a patina over time when worn next to your skin, but this is easily buffed out with a polishing cloth.

Keeping both sterling silver and pewter jewelry away from perfumes hairsprays and other aerosols will help prolong the finish on your jewelry.  If you do notice any discoloration from exposure to these things, your jewelry can be polished and refinished quite easily to it’s original finish.

How do I polish and clean my jewelry?

You can clean your jewelry easily using warm soapy water and a very soft brush or cloth.  You can also use a polishing cloth to brighten your jewelry and remove any tarnish.
